Warriner was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2006 and, after induction chemotherapy, underwent autologous stem cell transplantation at MD Anderson. He eloquently shared his story at the colloquium and will soon present his experiences to a panel at the National Cancer Institute. Immediate and late effects of symptoms and toxicities of cancer treatment can cause great distress to patients, limiting their functioning during and after treatment, and sometimes causing premature termination of treatment or reductions in dose. Therapy-related toxicities also can limit the development of new treatment options. As a step toward addressing these issues, we convened a working panel in March 2011 at a colloquium that included stakeholders in cancer research, industry, regulatory agencies and advocacy groups. The participants came together in Houston to identify the challenges that have prevented progress in reducing treatment-related symptom burden. We also developed a list of strategic steps to address these challenges, and identified stakeholders and agencies that could implement them.

The controversy over chemotherapy appears to be ever on the increase, although this is not too surprising when one stands back & looks at many of the facts surrounding this form of cancer treatment. What is surprising, though, is that in this day & age people are still put through this horrendous so called ‘treatment’ with the hope of regaining their health when in fact the truth is that they are unaware of the true damage being caused to their body & their chances, though chemotherapy alone, of a full recovery are so low that it seems like an ‘unnecessary evil’ of today’s society.
But, of course, for those responsible for developing the drugs used in chemotherapy it is very necessary, for one thing only; huge profits. Some people may wonder how this could be true & how this could be allowed to go on if it were true, well I guess it is all down to government funding. The big drug companies make billions of pounds per year from chemotherapy as well as the many other drugs & inoculations etc. pushed on us by our GP’s & government backed advertising, so it makes sense that the government receive a big cut of these profits. Many of the most effective treatments out there are in fact natural & so they would be unable to patent them which would mean a huge loss in profits for the government & most likely the end of the control these drug companies actually have over society, if everyone were to turn to natural treatment options. Unfortunately this is the corrupt world in which we currently live. It does make you wonder also, when you consider that over 90% of all the money earned in the world, is in fact earned by just 2% of the population! I think they definitely know something most of us do not. Could this be down to the control of the general public through drugs they convince us to believe in, which are nothing but a money making method at the expense of our physical & spiritual health & even our lives? It is a lot to consider but I think there is definitely more truth in this than most of us would like to believe.
Success rate of chemotherapy:
It may just shock you to know that in fact more people die from the damage to their body from chemotherapy than die of cancer its self. Well if that is not shocking enough for you it may surprise you to know that scientists insist that chemotherapy is not even effective against 80% of cancers, yet it is still the method of treatment usually recommended by oncologists in such cases.
“Why?”
Perhaps this is because they do not have a better alternative to try; perhaps they believe it is the best form of treatment for their patients? The fact that oncologists earn a hefty commission for each patient they get on chemotherapy may have an influence, yet we would hope that this was not the driving force behind such a decision from those people we trust, literally with our lives.
So, just how successful is chemotherapy likely to be for someone considering this as their treatment option for cancer?
Well, exact statistics are very difficult to find but there is enough information out there to make it easy enough to get the general idea.
First of all it is important to understand just what is meant by the given statistics. Usually these are based over a five year period, so if they live this period out then the treatment would be considered a success. However, the fact is that people who have undergone chemotherapy & radio therapy are now more susceptible to cancer, so the chances of it returning at some point in the future are quite high. If this happens after the five years following their initial treatment, they are still considered to have been cured, even if they die in year six. Also there is the quality of life factor to consider; chemotherapy causes so much pain & suffering that depending on the outcome you hope to achieve, be it a few more months or to hopefully guarantee the success of surgery, it has to be considered if it is really worth it.
Now, in my opinion of what would be a far more suitable method to defining ‘being cured’ should be that the patient becomes completely cancer free & never dies of cancer, or the treatment. Also a suitable treatment plan should be one that works with the human body, with no terrible side effects & no risk of long term damage to the immune system.
However, now we understand a bit about the survival statistics & what they really do actually mean, here they are:
Medical statistics put the overall survival rate for orthodox cancer treatments at 40-50% (over 5 years from diagnosis).
Now the actual figure, when we consider the survival rate to mean that the person never dies of cancer, the treatment, any side effects of the treatment, or by any direct or indirect cause relating to the treatment is just 3%!

Given that chemotherapy is shown to have such destructive consequences in terms of immediate side-effects & susceptibility to further illness through the weakened state it leaves our body in, its more often than not completely unnecessary usage can only bring us to the conclusion that someone somewhere, perhaps people on many levels are making a killing through it. Pun intended.
Surely it makes sense that when faced with a serious disease we should be strengthening our body & its defences, building our immune system & boosting its ability to fight off this illness, enhancing our cell’s ability to repair themselves & protecting those cells which are still healthy.

Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, refers to the cancer that originates in the kidneys. The term kidney cancer is usually not used to refer to the metastatic cancer of the kidneys, i.e. the cancer that spreads from other parts of the body to the kidneys. There are several types of kidney cancer, out of which the most common type is renal cell carcinoma. Renal cell carcinoma accounts for almost 85% of the total cases of kidney cancer and it is very important to know about the different kidney cancer treatment options.
Other less common types of kidney cancer includes, transitional cell carcinoma and Wilm’s tumor. Wilm’s tumor is the most common type of kidney cancer that affects the young children. Apart from these three types, there are many other types of kidney cancer, but they are quite rare. Kidney cancer treatment depends to a great extent on the specific types, along with the stage in which the disease is detected. Below here is a brief explanation about the causes, symptoms and the treatment for kidney cancer.
Causes and Symptoms of Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer is more prevalent in men, as compared to women. Therefore, gender is considered as a risk factor for developing this cancer. But, what exactly causes kidney cancer is still not known. However, researches conducted in this regard have been able to find out certain risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing kidney cancer. Some of the most important risk factors for this condition are, smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, long term dialysis treatment for kidney failure, diseases like, ‘Von Hippel-Lindau disease’ and ‘hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma’ and occupational exposure to certain chemicals like, asbestos and cadmium.
The signs and symptoms of kidney cancer usually become evident only in the later stage of the disease. In the early stage, this cancer is usually asymptomatic. The most common kidney cancer symptoms that can be observed in the later stage of the disease are
Blood in urine or hematuria
A palpable mass or lump in the side of the abdomen
Excessive fatigue
Weight loss
Back pain, usually below the ribs
Fever

Kidney Cancer Treatment
Diagnosis, as well as staging of kidney cancer can involve several tests and examinations. This cancer is usually detected with the help of blood and urine test, CT scan, MRI and biopsy. Once cancer is detected, physicians try to determine the stage, i.e. the extent to which the cancer has spread. This may require additional MRI and CT scan at times. There are basically four stages of kidney cancer, stage I, stage II, stage III and stage IV, and cancer treatment basically depends on the stage in which it is detected.
Several new kidney cancer treatment options have been developed in the recent years. Today, kidney cancer more commonly treated with surgery, cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, embolization, chemotherapy, biological therapy and target therapy. Surgery is typically the initial treatment for kidney cancer, and it can involve removal of the affected kidney along with the adjacent healthy tissues and the lymph nodes (nephrectomy), or removal of the tumor along with a small amount of healthy tissues surrounding the tumor (partial nephrectomy). If surgery is not possible, then kidney cancer can be treated with cryoablation, embolization and radiofrequency ablation.
In cryoablation, the cancerous cells are frozen with extreme cold. Usually, a hollow needle is inserted through the skin and into the tumor, after which gas in the needle is used to freeze the cancerous cells. In radiofrequency ablation, the cancer cells are burned down with the help of electrical current. For this purpose, a special needle is inserted through the skin and into the tumor, after which electrical current is passed through the needle. Embolization on the other hand, blocks the supply of blood and oxygen to the tumor in order to shrink it. In this procedure, a special substance is injected into the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the kidney. This deprives the tumor of oxygen and nutrients that it needs to grow. This procedure is also known as arterial embolization, and it is sometimes carried out before surgery.
However, if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, then its treatment can require surgery, chemotherapy, target therapy and biological therapy. Surgery is carried out to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Chemotherapy uses different cancer medications to destroy the cancer cells, and it may precede surgery at times. Biological therapy on the other hand, uses specific drugs to stimulate the immune system to fight against the cancer. Target therapy is another kidney cancer treatment that employs drugs to block the abnormal signals, which play an important role in the growth and proliferation of the cancerous cells.
So, these are the usual treatment options for kidney cancer. The preference for a particular treatment option depends on several factors including, the general health of the patient, the type of kidney cancer, size of the tumor and the extent to which the cancer has spread. So, a suitable treatment plan can be developed only after evaluating the condition thoroughly. I need help explaining this. Heres the question: In one person cancer may be cured through the use of a certain drug or by means of radiation treatment, whereas in another person cancer may be unaffected by these treatment methods. Suggest the most likely explanation for this difference in response.

There are many types of cancer cells at many different levels so even if two people have lung cancer they may have very different types and very different protocols for treatment.
