Oncimmune® (USA) LLC Recognizes Lung Cancer Awareness Month; Featuring 30 Individual Lung Cancer Stories

De Soto, KS (PRWEB) November 07, 2011

Oncimmune (USA) LLC, maker of EarlyCDT®-Lung, a simple blood test that aids physicians in the early detection of lung cancer, is promoting Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) through an educational blog series. The series will feature 30 stories in 60 days from lung cancer survivors, those currently battling the disease and people who have lost loved ones to lung cancer.

Founded in 2006, Oncimmune (USA) LLC is committed to the ongoing pursuit of early cancer detection methods. Now offering the EarlyCDT-Lung test in all 50 states, Oncimmune is changing the way physicians approach lung cancer detection. EarlyCDT-Lung is a simple blood test used to identify specific autoantibodes (immuno-biomarkers), which are elevated in patients with lung cancer. Because these autoantibodies are present at the earliest stages of the disease, EarlyCDT-Lung can be used to aid in diagnosing high risk patients, potentially before they exhibit specific symptoms of lung cancer.

Observed during the month of November, LCAM is an annual educational campaign designed to raise awareness about the risk factors of lung cancer, detection methods, symptoms and available treatment options. During this annual observation, thought leaders in lung cancer research and education work together to foster conversation about this dangerous disease.

Oncimmune is doing their part to raise awareness during LCAM. The blog series was launched on Oncimmune’s educational website, http://www.HelloHaveYouHeard.com, on October 25. The 30 Stories in 60 Days series will run through mid-December. Each week the blog will feature stories of lung cancer survivors, as well as accounts from those who have lost loved ones to the disease.

One such story is of Sandra, a 66 year old lung cancer survivor. Sandra was a heavy smoker, but had stopped smoking in 2003. After suffering a continuous pain in her side, Sandra had a CT scan. The CT revealed a spot on her left lung. Her doctor recommended remaining vigilant with frequent follow-up imaging. While the spot on her lung was visible by CT, a PET scan did not reveal any signs of it being cancer.

Having lost her brother to the disease, this scare motivated Sandra to do more research. During her investigation she discovered Oncimmune’s Facebook page, and learned about EarlyCDT-Lung. Sandra decided to order an EarlyCDT-Lung collection kit and worked with her pulmonologist to have her blood drawn. The test results were positive, indicating that lung cancer might be present. After further evaluation, it turned out that Sandra had stage IA adenocarcinoma, predominantly bronchioloalveolar type.

Fortunately, her cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes and a thoracic surgeon was able to remove the tumor. In fact, just a couple weeks after Sandra’s surgery, she was back to teaching Zumba classes.

“We are honored to share these inspirational stories from some very strong individuals,” said Dan Calvo, President and CEO of Oncimmune. “Lung cancer has impacted my immediate family and I know that raising awareness about lung cancer through sharing of personal experiences is a valuable tool to fight and cope with this disease.”

In addition to the 30 Stories in 60 Days campaign, Oncimmune released an educational video series to promote LCAM. Each video provides insight and information to help the general public better understand the risks factors of lung cancer and the importance of early detection. Watch for more exciting announcements from Oncimmune as they work to educate the public about lung cancer during LCAM and throughout the year.

Breast Cancer awareness month

Disco superstar Gloria Gaynor joined well-known Texas philanthropists Lester and Sue Smith in a colorful, surprise dance tribute performed by more than 200 breast cancer survivors and supporters at the Houston Galleria mall June 4, 2011. The upbeat video was released June 5 in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day. The event had a single goal —to celebrate the survivor in all of us and raise awareness about breast cancer, a disease that strikes one in eight women nationally. The event also launched the Smith’s Pink Well Challenge, a national campaign symbolized by an active pink pump jack located in the heart of West Texas. Through Pink Well Challenge, the Lester and Sue Smith Foundation will give away up to million in matching funds to eligible breast cancer organizations. Applications are being taken at www.pinkwell.org until October 1, 2011. Featured dancers included the Smiths, who are two-time National Latin Dance Champions. A successful Texas oilman, Smith is also a two-time cancer survivor.

November is National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month

Sebastopol, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2005

November is National Family Caregiver’s Month. One in every six Americans is a family caregiver, and their number keeps growing. More than 50 million family caregivers across the country provide over 80% of all homecare, contributing more than $ 257 billion worth of work. Businesses lose up to $ 29 billion annually because of employees who must provide care to family members.

More Americans join the ranks of family caregivers every day. Most assume their new duties with no training or support. They struggle to balance the demands of family and work with providing care to their loved ones. National Family Caregivers’ Month gives them the recognition they deserve.

Maryann Schacht, MSW, is a nationally recognized expert on caregiving issues. Her book, A Caregiver’s Challenge: Living, Loving, Letting Go, has become an invaluable resource for caregivers. The book combines Schacht’s personal experience caring for her terminally ill husband with her professional expertise as a therapist and offers a roadmap to all caregivers. National health organizations including the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Diseases Center have selected it for their libraries.

She is a knowledgeable and engaging interview subject who can provide informed answers to tough questions. Her interviews have aired on KFTY-TV, Santa Rosa; KVON, Napa; WTPI, Indianapolis; KWXY-AM, Palm Springs; KFOR, Lincoln; Morris Desert Media Radio Group; and nationally syndicated “A Touch of Grey.” She has addressed the Commonwealth Club, and served as the keynote speaker at many conferences.

More information about Maryann Schacht and her book is available at http://www.caregivers-challenge.net.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Farshad Abir, MD, colorectal surgeon with Summit Medical Group

Berkeley Heights, NJ (Vocus) February 27, 2010

Summit Medical Group (http://www.summitmedicalgroup.com) wants people to be aware of their risk for colorectal cancer. Even if a person has a risk factor or several risk factors for colorectal cancer, there is no guarantee that he or she will get the disease. In addition, some people will get colorectal cancer even if they have no known risk factors for it. For these reasons and because early detection and treatment is critical for successfully treating the disease, it’s important to be screened.

“All people by age 50 are at average risk for colorectal cancer,” according to Dr. Farshad Abir, colorectal surgeon at Summit Medical Group. “If a person has inflammatory bowel disease or other risk factors for colorectal cancer, he or she should begin screening at an earlier age.”

Some common risk factors that can increase odds for developing colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer include:

Age
More than 90% of colorectal cancer cases are diagnosed in people age 50 years or more

Eating a diet high in saturated fat that includes a large percentage of red and processed meats as well as meats that are cooked at very high temperatures through frying, broiling, and grilling
Researchers believe chemicals in red and processed meats and chemical changes in meats cooked at very high temperatures increase the risk of colorectal cancer

Obesity
Studies show an increased risk of colorectal cancer in people who are obese

Personal history of colorectal polyps
Having many as well as large polyps increase colorectal cancer risk

Personal history of colorectal cancer
Previous colon cancer increases the odds it will recur in the colon and rectum

Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
These conditions alter the cells in the lining of the colon, sometimes leading to cancer

Family history of colorectal cancer
Although most colorectal cancers occur in people with no family history of the disease, research shows that 1 in 5 people with colorectal cancer have a family member who has or has had the disease

Being physically inactive
The relationship between lack of physical activity and colorectal cancer is unknown, but researchers speculate that physical activity helps prevent obesity, a risk factor for colorectal cancer. In addition, cellular changes and other body processes that benefit from physical activity might help prevent colorectal cancer in some people

Smoking
The risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer is greater in long-term smokers, especially men, compared with people who do not smoke

Excessive alcohol consumption (more than 2 drinks per day for men and more than 1 drink per day for women) Researchers believe that low folic acid levels in heavy drinkers might contribute to higher colorectal cancer rates

Other risk factors include:

Inherited familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
Approximately 1% of colorectal cancers are found in people with a mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene

Inherited nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)
Also known as Lynch syndrome, HNPCC accounts for 3% to 4% of all colorectal cancers

Juvenile Polyposis syndrome and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
Rare and inherited, these syndromes increase a person’s risk of adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer

Being African American or of Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish descent
Genetic mutations increase the risk of colorectal cancer in people with these racial/ethnic backgrounds

Having type 2 (noninsulin dependent) diabetes
Although researchers are unsure about the exact cause, the increased incidence of colorectal cancer in people with type 2 diabetes might be associated with excess weight. Some people with type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer also have a less favorable prognosis after they are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. If you have type 2 diabetes, ask your gastroenterologist how often you should be screened for colorectal cancer

Personal history of treatment for cancer of any kind
Studies show that people who have been treated for certain cancers have higher rates of colorectal cancer. In particular, radiation treatment might increase a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer

Men and women who meet the risk criteria should ask a physician about their risk for colorectal cancer, what test might be right and how often they should be screened.

The Cancer Center at Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia Recognizes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

The Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Recognizes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

John Maris, M.D., director of the Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) September 10, 2010

The Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia kicks off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with a specialized toolkit to harness The Power of C—Connecting Against Childhood Cancer.

The Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia invites families whose lives have been touched by childhood cancer to advocate, fundraise and share your personal story to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and support research efforts at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and beyond. This cancer advocacy toolkit, was developed as a way to partner with our Cancer Center patient-families and the larger community to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer.

“In 2010, close to 11,000 children will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1,300 will die of the disease. We need to develop better treatments to cure kids of their cancer, and minimize the long-term side effects of these powerful drugs,” said John Maris, M.D., director of the Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month brings these issues to the forefront, and I invite everyone to join the cause to fight against childhood cancer by partnering with the Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.”

As one of the largest pediatric cancer centers in the country, the Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia offers the most cutting-edge treatments available for kids with cancer, many of which have been pioneered by CHOP physician-scientists. One example: Physician-scientist Stephan Grupp, M.D. identified a drug called sirolamus to prevent relapse and graft vs. host disease for children with leukemia who undergo a blood and marrow transplant (BMT). This clinical trial was piloted at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is now part of a national study, giving new hope to children with a particularly grim prognosis. This is just one of many discoveries in the research lab that has been effectively translated to help patients at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and across the country.

Despite incredible advances in the treatment of childhood cancers, not every child survives. Tara’s story reminds us that we must never rest until cures are found. That is our responsibility to her and all the children we serve. Watch Tara’s video diary here. Join Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout September, Children’s Hospital will sponsor events and offer an advocacy toolkit with the goal of raising awareness and funds so the Cancer Center can continue to develop new and better treatments for kids with cancer.

Harness the Power of C. Connect Against Childhood Cancer. Join the Cause. Make a difference.

About the Cancer Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia cares for more children with cancer than any other general pediatric hospital in the United States. Its large basic and clinical research programs are particularly strong in pediatric neuro-oncology, neuroblastoma, leukemia and lymphoma, and sarcomas. Of all pediatric institutions, Children’s Hospital enrolls the most patients in national clinical trials, working in close collaboration with national organizations such as the Children’s Oncology Group. Physicians at Children’s Hospital have had pioneering roles in developing international standards for diagnosing and treating neuroblastoma, and in developing programs for survivors of childhood cancer.
