Targeted Therapy Shows Benefit in Rare Type of Thyroid Cancer

Treatment with the multitargeted agent vandetanib (Caprelsa) improved progression-free survival in patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), according to findings from a randomized clinical trial. Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved vandetanib for the treatment of patients with MTC based on initial findings from the phase III trial. MTC is a rare cancer, accounting for only 5 percent of all thyroid cancer cases, and radiation and chemotherapy have limited effects once the cancer progresses to an advanced stage.

Newer Cancer Drugs May Cause Thyroid to Function Abnormally

Over the last decade, many patients with cancer have benefited from the development of new targeted therapies and immunotherapies. But a common side effect of these agents may be unintended effects on the thyroid gland, according to a report published online today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

What are some thyroid cancer risk factors?

cancer Risk Factors
by Christiana Care

Question by Katie: What are some thyroid cancer risk factors?
I’ve just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and they suspect thyroid nodules as well. I was just wondering if there were any specific risk factors that might increase the likelihood that the nodules could be malignant. For example, I have family history of thyroid problems (I don’t know if they included nodules or not) and a goiter that had to be removed on both sides of my family, but I don’t think any of them were cancerous- could this increase the risk that mine might be malignant? Or is there anything else such as age, physical symptoms, etc.?

Cancer rarely causes enlargement of the gland, more often causes a small growth (nodule) in the gland.
Most are benign thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer is usually curable.

Thyroid cancer often limits the ability to absorb iodine and limiting the ability to produce thyroid hormone, but sometimes cancer produce enough thyroid hormone resulting in hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid nodules tend to be malignant if it:
- Just found one
- Screening thyroid nodules do not indicate that the function
- Nodule solid and its content is not fluid (cystic)
- Hard nodule
- Fast growth.

CAUSE
Thyroid cancer is more common in people who have undergone radiation therapy to the head, neck or chest.

Other risk factors are family history of thyroid cancer and chronic goiter.

SYMPTOMS
There are a enlargement of the thyroid gland or neck swelling.

Patient voice changed, or become hoarse.

It could happen cough or coughing up blood, and diarrhea or constipation.

DIAGNOSIS
Early sign of thyroid cancer is usually a lump that did not feel pain in the neck.

nodule screening thyroid function can determine whether or not, because the nodules are not working tend to be malignant.

Ultrasound can help determine whether nodule solid or filled with fluid.

Examples of these nodules are usually taken with a needle for biopsy purposes.
Biopsy is the best way to determine whether benign or malignant nodule.

Thyroid Cancer Risk Persists in People Exposed to I-131 Radiation as Children

People who were exposed to radioactive iodine (I-131) as children or adolescents after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster have a long-term increased risk of developing radiation-related thyroid cancer. In a study of more than 12,000 people in three Ukrainian states near the Chernobyl site, researchers found that the risk of radiation-related thyroid cancer doubled for every gray (Gy) of exposure to the thyroid. (A gray is an international measurement used for radiation dose.) This risk did not decrease over 9 years of follow up during the study.

Drug-like compound stops thyroid overstimulation in early studies

Researchers have identified a compound that prevents overproduction of thyroid hormone, a finding that brings scientists one step closer to improving treatment for Graves’ disease. In Graves’ disease, the thyroid gland never stops. Thyroid-stimulating antibodies bind to receptors, activating them to keep the thyroid hormone coming and coming — like a broken traffic light stuck on green — and causing the body problems in regulating energy, controlling other hormones and maintaining cells throughout the body.
